Toby, the white elephant

When Middle Ages craftsmanship skills meet contemporary creation

Each Toby, the white elephant is handmade with centenary traditional methods that have proven their capacity to defy time. To ensure the endless durability of our products and make each of them unique, two medieval techniques (lost-wax casting bronze and enamel "grand feu") are used for their manufacturing. As to fit today's needs and way of life, a special effort has been made to forge them as thin and lightweight as possible without impacting their solidity.

The bronze model is cast from the original wax model, then the enamel is applied on the bronze base in very thin layers. The colors slowly reveal themselves during the process of multiple firings, giving them an incredible transparency. Each of the craftsmen gestures follow those used in France in the XIIst Century. The result is unalterable.

The story

For years I've been working as a jewelery designer for various brands but I've always desired to develop a collection of my own. I wanted a high quality one, but it was a far too big investment for me to create the high-end jewels I was used to work with.  It is then that I've decided to take an interest in the methods used by our distant ancestors -the Middle Ages craftsmen- whose jewels are still to be seen intact in museums. By using the same material and by following their gestures, it is a whole heritage that comes back to life.

It is how I've created Toby, the white elephant. And because I care about animal welfare, a percentage of my benefits will be given to animal charities, Toby will then contribute to the protection of our precious wildlife.
